New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the appointment of Dina Levy as commissioner of the Department of Housing Preservation & Development (HPD) in the Bronx on Sunday. The mayor also signed an executive order to launch “rental ripoff” hearings across all five boroughs.
Levy, a longtime housing advocate, appeared alongside the mayor, elected officials and tenants at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, widely recognized as “the birthplace of Hip Hop.”
“What an honor it is to be asked to become a part of Mayor Mamdani’s new administration,” Levy said.
One of her first jobs will be to hold a series of hearings in defense of tenants to speak about the challenges they face, from poor building conditions to hidden fees on rent payments. Once finalized, the administration will publish a summary report and implement fixes.
After the housing announcement, Mamdani was asked about his disagreement with the U.S. operation in Venezuela on Saturday. He said that he had been “very straightforward” with the public, and that his conversation with President Trump on the matter was “forthright, it was direct and it was brief.”
