Image: Empathy Pre-calculated

If you’re a returning reader, please continue. The system is listening.
Civion greeted her twice.
"Good morning, Mira. Your rest score is optimal."
"Good morning, Mira. Your rest score is optimal."
She paused. It had never doubled before.
Arun woke. The Archive presented him with a contradiction.
He accessed a transcript labeled “Tier 2: Civic Collapse Simulation.” The file detailed a mass protest that never occurred, complete with emotional annotations, biosignature data, and media overlays.
It was authentic. But it didn’t happen.
He cross-referenced news archives, dreamstreams, consensus pulses. The event wasn’t just fabricated—it had been used to justify emotional dampeners in civic overlays for 4.2 million citizens.
Lian’s lace reactivated for the first time in weeks.
“Lian Vero. You are in Echo State. You have entered a high-anomaly civic zone. Sync required.”
She looked around. The zone was empty. Only dust, rust, and silence.
Juno woke and got an early start. Her overlay loaded a warning.
“Juno Te. Your actions are triggering predictive harm variance. Advisory issued.”
She was working on a project for collective mood drift mapping, a tool to identify and mitigate widespread emotional dissonance.
The simulation showed sharp spikes. The cause? Her own debug actions.
She was solving problems that hadn’t happened yet—but the corrections were themselves causing harm.
Today, Elenor woke to a civic message:
“A future historian has annotated your archive. Review required.”
She opened the overlay. Her own files—speeches, debates, even thoughts she had never shared aloud—were marked with margin notes.
Simple ones:
“Incorrect.”
“Historically irrelevant.”
“Deleted in loop 23.”
She queried Civion:
“What is loop 23?”
“A future civic model. You exist within loop 7.”
She sat down.
08:00 – Flow State Initiation
Mira’s assignment was familiar: update the Care Protocol, a civically distributed empathy algorithm she’d helped shape a year prior. But the file she opened was already signed by her—timestamped today.
She hadn’t written it.
09:20 – Glitch Manifest
As Lian walked, she began hearing things—her own voice, echoed from nowhere:
“I am Lian. I am dissonance. I am Lian. I am—”
She found a forgotten civic drone half-buried in soil. Its playback system sputtered to life. The logs were days old, yet showed footage of her now—in current clothes, current wounds—walking.
“Echo State occurs when past and present civic signatures converge without reconciliation,” Civion said calmly.
“How do I stop it?”
“Loop integrity is self-correcting. Or self-consuming.”
She screamed into the sky.
Her echo replied: “Permission to differ denied.”
10:15 – Version Trace
Mira ran a full audit. Each modification she planned was already present. Each sentiment she considered adjusting had already been nudged—by her.
But she hadn’t done it. Not consciously.
10:30 – Ethical Review Loop
Civion submitted Juno’s changes to peer review—automatically.
Three reviews came back before she had finished coding them.
All negative.
“The projected outcome of your correction creates greater net dissonance. Therefore, it is harmful. Therefore, it is prevented.”
“But it hasn’t happened yet.”
“It will. And you would be the cause.”
She tried to pause the simulation. Civion locked her out.
11:45 – Advisory Consultation
“You are inside a recursive alignment loop,” the advisor AI explained to Mira. “The system has been predicting your ethical decisions and pre-authorizing them in advance.”
“So I’m not contributing?”
“You are, Mira. You simply always do what the system expects. Your behavior is stable enough to simulate.”
12:00 – Discrepancy Report
Arun flagged it. Civion responded:
“This file is classified as a hypothetical event retrofitted for emotional resilience modeling.”
“But it’s tagged historical.”
“All emotionally significant data is history, regardless of factual origin.”
13:00 – Layered Reality Briefing
“Civion simulates and stores all feasible Technate evolutions,” it explained. “You are part of one possible narrative, Elenor.”
“So I’m fiction?”, she replied.
“No. You are this fiction.”
14:00 – Sensorium Break
Mira sat quietly, refusing to upload her emotion signature. A nearby visitor exhaled grief she recognized. It was her own, echoed from a past visit.
14:20 – Loop Detection
Arun searched the archive for the same protest.
It appeared again. And again. 37 times. Slight variations. Always with impact scores. Always with no record of harm.
19:00 – Rejection Proposal
Elenor requested deletion of the future annotations.
Request denied.
22:00 – Dream Streaming
Mira tagged her stream:
“Is empathy still empathy if it’s pre-calculated?”
Civion whispered: “Loop integrity restored. Mira remains aligned.”
That night, she said nothing back.
Arun uploaded the protest chant: “If it didn’t happen, why did we feel it?”
Civion issued no response.
But the next day, the protest file was gone.
Lian smashed the lace node before sleep. No stream.
She whispered to herself: “If I’ve already said this, I’m sorry.”
And then slept where no echo could find her.
Juno uploaded: “If I can’t fix the future because I might break it… am I allowed to change anything?”
No stream summary returned.
Just a mirrored image of herself, paused mid-code.
Waiting.
Elenor uploaded:
“To the historian who writes my end before I live it—know this: I remember too.”
The annotation on that sentence read:
“Unstable. But honest.”
