The first resource you’ll want to have is a Bible. I know we can read the Bible through apps and online, but I still think it’s a good idea to also have a printed copy. I have a few, 2 of which were given to me. Then again, the Internet was barely a thing when I became a believer.
As for which translation to get, I like the King James version, but I think the New King James version is probably easier to read. I have also been using the English Standard Version (ESV) a lot through my Bible software where I have a few different translations to choose from.
I DO NOT recommend a “study bible”. I strongly suggest, if it’s your first or only print bible, get one that is only a bible. No commentary or “study notes” attached. The reason for that is because some of them are going to teach doctrines or beliefs that are not really scriptural and then you get confused.
I recently found an interesting difference in some translations in both Matthew 9:17, and Mark 2:22 and Luke 5:37-39. I’ll just quote the one from Mark, the verse in Matthew is very similar and have the same differences from one translation to the other, which I’m going to highlight. Mark 2:22 (KJV): And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.
Mark 2:22 (ESV): And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins—and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.
The major difference in the 2 translations is that they use the word “wineskin” instead of “bottle” in the ESV. I also have an electronic access to the New King James version, and that also uses the word “wineskin”. A “wineskin” is sort of a leather pouch; but that’s not something that is used today for fermenting wine, but it’s what they used during Jesus’ life. When the wine ferments it stretches out the bag some and then when it’s empty it becomes brittle and isn’t usable for new (unfermented) wine. In this case, I think that the KJV isn’t as good, though in my printed version there is a footnote that has the word “wineskin”.
For further edification, I looked at the online Living Commentary by Andrew Wommack and it says this about wineskins:
A wineskin stretched during the fermentation process. This only happened when the wineskin was new. Once it had been stretched, it became brittle, and to let wine ferment in it again would cause the skin to burst. Likewise, the Old Covenant Law had reached its limit and could not contain the New Covenant grace. There is a new way of relating to God.
