LAND & LEGACY
The Shuumi Land Tax is a voluntary annual contribution that non-Indigenous people can make to support the critical work of the Sogorea Te’ Land Trust. While the traditional territory of the Ohlone community is now one of the most inflated real estate markets in the world, the Ohlone have been politically and economically marginalized for generations. As someone who lives and works on traditional Ohlone land, Samin has been committed to paying the Shuumi Tax for years, and during this time of giving thanks and sharing gratitude, we want to encourage you to try and do the same for your local Indigenous community. Start by exploring these Native Land and Reciprocity maps, then go from there!
A PASH FOR PASSION FRUIT
Roughly three years ago, Samin planted a passionfruit tree along the fence in her side yard because it is, unequivocally, her favorite fruit, and it’s also really expensive. You’d never guess that the jungle which has sprouted since grew from a single contributing tree, but it’s true. The other week she harvested two buckets full—enough to produce over a gallon of the most gorgeous juice and send a box load of fruit to friends the next day.
We know not everyone will have such easy access, but we couldn’t let the season pass without some celebration! In addition to making incredible (if precious) juice, we also love to mix it in with our yogurt (Ebony), to make passion fruit curd (Amalia), to eat that curd straight from a jar with some Nilla Wafers (Robbie), and our food stylist (Jillian) mixed up a truly incredible passionfruit and mezcal cocktail at the end of our last shoot.
