Our Violet Hour Book Club pick for July is The Freezer Door [Semiotext(e), 2020] by Seattle writer Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore. Written as a series of fragments, the non-fiction collection is a meditation on the trauma and possibility of searching for connection in a world that enforces bland norms of gender, sexual, and social conformity.
In advance of our July 18 VHBC meeting, Mattilda and I got together to talk about the origins of the book, “The Seattle Freeze,” how nostalgia prevents us from seeing the present moment, and why the promise of queer life often falls short of what we expect.
