Ah… Caribou!

Wednesday 24th of August

Slept quite late after not sleeping well last night both because of the noisy road and because we had to get up early. Went to visitor center and used the internet for a bit. In the afternoon we did the Rock Creek Trail from the visitor center out to the dogs. It wasn’t much longer than an hour but it was quite hard going for me, I am really out of shape with my walking after nearly 2 months on the river. It was a really nice trail though and we only meet two groups of people so it was nice and quiet compared to the visitor area. We got to the dog area just as the sledge dog demonstration was finishing but that was good as there were a lot of people and they left shortly afterwards. We did hear Danish spoken by some visitors! Said hello to some of the dogs, saw the 5 week old puppies and then left again after having late lunch at a picnic table watching park people working. We walked back along the road trail which was shorter than the Rock Creek Trail.

Having found out there is a Ranger program at all campsites nearly every evening at 19.30 we decided to go for it. It was about beavers by Ranger Doris. It started with Park safety talk about how far to stay away from bear and moose. It was an interesting talk about beavers but a bit too interactive? We had to take part, I didn’t mind the reading part but was very glad there were kids there when one had to be dressed up as a beaver!

Quick note about the dates… You wouldn’t know this if I didn’t tell you, but I’m a little off with my dates and the photos associated with them. Hmm… Ultimately, reading Jane’s notes, I can’t put them together with the photos I have in folders marked for the same day. Jane’s not wrong, but I think the folders are. Rather, I think the camera settings have the dates for the day and month and year, but haven’t accounted for different time zones. This is my best theory, but it’s been bugging me through all the previous posts. However, moving on (and leaping a day ahead of the folders) here is today’s post.

This isn’t the last smiley I have a photo of.

Jane’s got you covered with what we did, so I’ll be cheeky today, and leave you with the photos.

Big moose!

I will just add that, on parting, Lars suggested I take one of his two Nikons, and I’m pleased I did.

More big moose - same one.

A bit of grandeur!

Jane, striding off into the wild!

Jane gets used to me falling behind to take photos. She doesn’t stop. In this instance, I’m pleased she didn’t. I like this photo.

A little slice of heaven!

One of the highlights of spending time in Denali was catching up with old friends. This fella could easily be mistaken for our old lead dog Kaassassuk.

Jane and I felt rather at home with the Denali Sledge Dogs!

Nope, doesn’t get much better than hanging out with sledge dogs! Or, rather, these guys would be sled dogs. Need to get my references right. ;-)

Ah… Even on grey days there’s some ‘ah’!

It was a grey day, but it was a good day.
