Friday 19th of August

Went to have breakfast but for some reason there was no buffet so we decided not to have any. We walked towards Walmart (which turned out to be way farther away than expected) and found a breakfast place.

Walked past REI to Walmart where we bought a prepaid phone. It came with phone and all! Back to REI where we bought a rucksack and another couple of things. Back to the hotel where we packed 3 boxes at just under 10 kg each which we got to the post office to send just after 17. Now the young girl that served us today really didn’t want to be at work and was quite unhelpful. I now see why there were bad reviews on the post office’s page! But we got rid of the boxes and now just have to pack everything before moving out of the hotel tomorrow.

Buying a backpack and sending a lot of gear home in the boxes was all part of a grander plan to lighten our load as we saw as much of Alaska as we could while slowly heading for home. It felt good to be relieved of the extra weight and bulk, but, sadly, the clothes we had in the boxes were stolen from two of them, and the paddles cost us a small fortune when we had to pay VAT on picking them up in Denmark. While the loss of a couple of duvet jackets and some useful, if a little worn, hooded fleece tops was sad, the books survived the attention of long-fingered folk along during shipping. As an author, I do appreciate that, and I can live without the jackets!

As for buying the phone, at the risk of more foreshadowing, I had my Jason Bourne moment, when we went into the store.

“Pre-paid phone, please.”

I may have added the please. But still. It felt kinda cool.

As for the Bourne reference, when you’ve watched the movies as many times as I have, then you’ll know the scene, and the movie it came from. Spoiler alert, it’s not the one below. ;-)

It turns out we didn’t take many photos on this day.

I’m putting it altogether and polishing here and there. It’ll be a few weeks yet before the Kickstarter backers get it, but the pre-order is live on Amazon USA, UK, CA, AUS, DE, and FR. It will be released on December 24, 2026. ;-)
