Nobody ever said, “Let’s charge people money for connecting to their friends and loved ones.” But that’s what happened when someone found a way to make it profitable.
Having a way to connect to people you care about, all on your own, is sensible. Because when you need it, you are going to really need it.
The web that holds together personal relationships has turned into a product, an economic equivalent of radial tires. It is a thing that can be sold to make money. Your attention, your caring, your desire for connection has been chopped up and put up for auction. And if someone can attract more of it than others, they can sell that and make money, too.
No value judgement here, making a living feeding the algorithm is as good as anything else. The problem is often these monetized relationships only exist on a for-profit platform. Most of our social connections can only be reached through Facebook, Instagram or X.
