Ah. Sale Season! Yet again, we find ourselves in a time where everything on the internet is on sale. And, the weather is legitimately better - more link spring!! - I exited my house in just a tank top this weekend for the first time since last September and it was like a song was playing with each step I took in the warm sun.
And so, yeah, I have a little bit of shoppies. Maybe you do too? It feels good to be excited about the season ahead and inspired by what I’m seeing in shops, online, in real life, and from other amazing writers on substack.
AND. Spending on stuff I don’t need, really want, or I’m not actually going to wear is a bummer. OVERSPENDING on those types of things is an even bigger bummer. So, while I love a sale, I really only love a sale when I save money on something I actually want, love, and fits into my life therefore I will either wear it constantly or find a way to wear it because when you really love something you just make it into something you can wear!
So, if you’re shopping - please, SHOP SMART! Get an amazing deal, but make it be on something that you love, want, can’t live without and are going to wear the crap out of!
Don’t spend your whole weekend wrapped up in sales. Have fun. Touch grass. Relax. Spend a little time browsing for what you’re looking for — and then move on!
We all need less new stuff than we think we do. And while there are few things better than finding something you cannot wait to wear or use the crap out of at a steal of a price, there are few things worse than blowing your budget and feeling guilty about it later — or buying something that just sits in your closet untouched. It’s a fine line. Let’s walk it.
This is not the only sale. There will be another one. There will, in fact, be many more (all summer long!). New here? I recommend tattooing that on your body — or, less permanently but equally effective, making a note on your phone. Brace yourself against the fabricated urgency to click checkout or lose. You’re not panic purchasing — you’re navigating a sale like a champ. You’re much more likely to regret buying something you didn’t actually want or need than you are to regret not buying something you did. Which brings me to —
Have a plan. Make a list of what you’re looking for. Could be something specific, could be a general category that gives you room to browse. Yes, this does require taking a look at what you already have in your closet (currently crossing black linen pants off my own wishlist — I have several pairs but what can I say, I REALLY love black linen pants!). When you’re browsing and find something you’re thinking about, bump it against your list. Already on there, or something similar? Great. Completely new, something you’ve never thought of before? That’s a sign to pass.
And if you don’t want or need anything — DON’T OPEN THE EMAILS!!!
