Christal Roberts · Doing the Time, Writing the Crime

The other day Judgement at Nuremberg was on TV. I’ve only seen the movie once, and it was quite a while ago, so I can’t remember details, but I remember when it was over I felt angry and unsatisfied. I can’t even say why. It was just a movie after all.

What’s happening in this country right now is not a movie. It’s real life. Real people are being kidnapped off the streets. Primarily Black and brown people. Real people are being terrorized and brutalized in detention centers that we can’t see and don’t know about. Primarily Black and brown people. Real people are being shot dead in the street by masked men.

Shot. Dead. In. The. Street.

Women and girls who were victims of predatory men and sick women accomplices are being ignored, and threatened because a group of the wealthy and powerful think the world is theirs. That Black people are theirs. That women and girls are theirs.

We. Are. Not.

When this is all over, and one day it will be, there need to be Nuremberg-like prosecutions that are vigorous and public. And a public that demands those trials and supports those trials. Wholeheartedly and without reservation. For as long as it takes.

Does that sound like a call for vengeance? Probably. I don’t care.

One day there will be multiple movies about the damage being done to this country and the many millions of good people who warned—loudly and often—that this was coming. Movies that will leave future generations angry and unsatisfied.
