When I was growing up way back in the 1900’s
I had wood paneling on the walls of several of my bedrooms
I say several because I did not have a house growing up
I had houses
And not in the “Man, we’re so rich we have THIS many homes” kind of way
My mom “rented” the front half of a duplex from my Papaw for a year
Then would move away when she got mad
And we’d live in a new place for a bit
Before she moved back
Hippie kids can be so capricious
But a couple of those rooms in my Papaw’s house had wood paneling
And if you’ve every worked with it, it’s thin, it’s forgiving and it’s cheap
Which made me think about why don’t more people who do the whole tiny home movement use wood paneling?
Everybody uses wallboards and mud and drywall’s it up
Which takes time, and a developed hand toward expertise
I know Papaw used it because it was fast
He could sling a hammer faster than a lot of air nailers
A level of expert lost on a anything after my generation
Including me
A one swing angle that knocked a sixteen penny nail in on the first hit
And a panelling nail
That was a gentle love tap
He had a canvas roofers pouch he wore instead of a tool belt
With a loop holster on the side to slide the haft of his hammer in
Though a belt loop would do too
Three or four thin nails pressed between his lips for quick and easy access
And bang, bang, bang bang
Four corners up and done and then the rest eight inches apart to keep the board from shifting or warping
A big room done in an hour
A job done in a day
And invoiced and billed
Or most of the time, cash collected
Then on to the next one
I’ve painted wood paneling a time or two in my adulthood
Covering the dark oak or pine stain with eggshell white gloss double coats
White, because it bounces light and makes any small space look bright and big
Or maybe because my idea of good design is so vanilla it’s almost shameful
I like big open spaces and not a lot of stuff
Unless it’s books stacked on shelves along one wall
And even now I wonder if that’s such a good idea because from experience I can tell you
books are dust magnets
So is everything else on a shelf or bracket
But when I think about the kinds of space I need to get work done
And I think about buiding out a tiny shed and turning it into a space
I only just now thought about wood panels and a couple of gallons of paint
Which makes me wonder…
