The photo above is from my artist publication “THE BLUE BOOK” which features poems and artwork/collages by me.
Valentine`s Day is coming up and as much as I would want to just regard it as the commercial invention/incentive it is, the romantic within me can´t help melting a little at the thought of getting flowers (though I´m happy to receive them any other day, too…) or a special love note. Especially as I`ve been single for most of my life I feel like I really have to catch up on receiving Valentine´s gifts now ; ) …
Anyway! I also love to gift things to the people dear to me. As far as I remember my boyfriend hasn´t subscribed to my Substack so I can actually share the poem I´m intending to gift him, on paper of course, handwritten of course (he has the prettier handwriting, what a pity that mostly I am the poet…!).
I´m gonna share the poem first and then tell you a little about the thoughts behind it and why I feel it´s a fitting poem (it might not strike you as very romantic first)… Let´s go:
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
The morning shores of sleep white landscapes still drenched with memory Crumbs of dreams we left behind the promised land of Morpheus (yet, we’ll find back) And as I’m looking at that scenery I know that our mountains’ crests are a silent monument to an invisible portal that each night we enter No morning pretending that nothing happened is a love language, too
Well… For me the most important part of the poem are the last three lines. Why? Many mornings or at lunchtime my boyfriend and I talk about our dreams (as much as we remember them, that is). To my boyfriend, who has a looooong relationship with the topic of dream & sleep and who also is professionally educated in this area, sleep and dreams are a very important part of life.
Many people, however, don´t think of dreams as very important and many of them don´t remember their dreams (and therefore often think they don´t dream, which is wrong). I guess a lot of people just don´t care about this part of their life as they don´t actually regard it as a part of their life (because, well, aren´t they just sleeping…?) For my boyfriend that is different. To him the world of dreams is just as important as the actual world and he regards it as a vital part of our being and us being whole.
Psychatrists/Psychologists like C.G. Jung and many others have spoken a lot about how crucial dreams are for us and how it is a way of our unconsious mind speaking to us, sending us messages. Many artists (of all kinds) and inventors have been inspired by dreams or found solutions to long pondered problems. And I personally have always found my dreams a great source of inspiration and wonder, too. I´ve written poems about dreams and painted special dreams. I´ve had quite a few dreams that I still remember today as they were so peculiar and they had me contemplate their meaning. With one of these special and intense dreams I had worked in an art and creative therapy training that I attended in Berlin in 2018. And that, too, was a very interesting experience as I could resolve something through the creative intervention which had waited for a kind of completion so I could make my peace with that dream.
But I´m rambling I guess… What I wanted to say is: For both my boyfriend and me dreams, the dreaming world, does matter. We don´t want to wake up and go through the day and pretend “nothing happened”, meaning we hadn´t any kind of dream-life (no matter if we rememeber the actual dream/s or not), too. And bonding over that shared fascination for dreams, treating them as something important rather as something that can be neglected is a kind of love language. Also with regard to dreams themselves. Honouring our dreams, honouring that part of our intelligence and the vast experiences that are possible in this realm, changes how we relate to our dreaming world and the time we spend dreaming.
Also: Dreams often are very intimate – and so feels talking about them. For my part, I don´t want to miss exploring the world of dreams and engaging in different ways to do so.
What about you?
One of my important dreams that I have painted with watercolors and I can still revive the feeling and dream scene just looking at it
