Crescent Moon

The night

as young

as me

bends to its

crescent moon

I am not new

but I am also

not full

~

Behind the poem: I’ve always been drawn to the moon because it refuses to apologize for being unfinished. We celebrate the full moon, but most nights it isn’t full—it exists somewhere in between. I think that’s where most of us actually live. This poem came from realizing that growth isn’t about becoming someone entirely new or waiting until you’re complete. It’s about honoring the season you’re in. The crescent moon carries enough light to remind us that becoming is its own kind of beauty. So do we.

Also, those last two lines—but I am also not full— mean so much to me as I get older. Yes, I am not new. And yet, I am also still hungry to enjoy the rest of my life and all it has to offer…
