Imagine a simple weekend project.
You connect a small board to a temperature sensor. You add a few lines of code, join it to your Wi-Fi, and suddenly your phone can tell you whether your plant needs water.
If you have watched DIY electronics videos, browsed GitHub, or searched for low-cost smart-home projects, you may have seen one short name again and again: ESP32.
“ESP” is not a generic word for all hobby electronics. It is part of an ecosystem built by Espressif Systems (乐鑫科技, Lè xīn kējì ), a Chinese wireless-chip company based in Shanghai. Its official open-source development framework, ESP-IDF, supports Espressif SoCs on Windows, Linux, and macOS.
What makes this story interesting is not only the chip.
A chip is hard to use by itself. A maker also needs sample code, documentation, tools, a development board, people who answer questions, and a place to share improvements. That is why an open developer ecosystem matters.
On 16 August 2026, the ESP-IDF repository showed 18.8k GitHub stars and 8.4k forks. It also showed more than 54,000 commits, alongside active issues and pull requests.
These numbers do not prove sales, market share, or that one chip is best for every project. They do show something more relevant for this article: thousands of people can see, reuse, discuss, and build on the same public technical project.
Before we look at the Chinese used inside this world, learn four expressions that make a DIY project much easier to describe.
The next time you see an ESP32 tutorial, try asking a better question than “What chip is this?”
Ask: what makes it possible for a beginner to turn an idea into a working device?
