A Chinese social-media story about a retired doctor who created work for dialysis patients has touched many people because it speaks about more than charity.
At Guangzhou Baoshutang Hemodialysis Centre, a garment workshop operates on another floor of the same building. Treatment schedules and work are coordinated so that some patients can do sewing, ironing, trimming, or packing when their health allows. Reports published in 2026 differ on the exact headcount at the time of reporting, but agree on the central idea: the workshop is trying to make room for people who were often pushed out of previous jobs after serious kidney illness.
The vocabulary behind the story matters. Dignity is zūnyán (尊严); a job opportunity is gōngzuò jīhuì (工作机会); and to support oneself through one’s own work is zìshíqílì (自食其力).
These words explain why the story resonates.
The workers are not only receiving help. Many want a chance to earn, participate, and be seen as colleagues rather than as problems to be managed.
