For a generation of Chinese consumers, Starbucks was coffee: a lifestyle statement, a status symbol, a “third space” between home and office that you paid a 30-yuan premium to inhabit. No domestic brand came close.

That era is ending. In late 2024, Starbucks announced it would cede its controlling stake in China to a local investment firm, a stunning reversal for a company that spent 26 years building one of its most important global markets. The culprit? A wave of homegrown challengers who figured out what Chinese consumers actually wanted: good coffee, fast, cheap.

Leading that charge is 幸运咖 (Xìngyùn Kā) — Lucky Cup — a freshly-ground coffee brand under the Mixue bubble tea empire. With nearly 10,000 outlets and a laser focus on quality at everyday prices, Lucky Cup has become the defining story of China’s coffee market in 2025.

How did that come to be?

(Xīngbākè): Starbucks (phonetic transliteration)

After numerous homegrown coffee brands rose and expanded, China’s coffee market witnessed one of its most landmark events in recent years — on November 4th, Starbucks, the global coffee giant with 26 years in China, announced the introduction of a local strategic investor and the relinquishing of its controlling stake in the Chinese market.

The news sent shockwaves through the industry. On one hand, despite the transfer of Starbucks China’s equity, China remains a market that Starbucks highly values with positive growth expectations. After agreeing to a strategic partnership with Chinese asset management firm Boyu Capital, one of the core goals is aggressive expansion — the two sides plan to grow Starbucks’ 8,000 Chinese outlets to 20,000.

  • 卖身 (màishēn): selling itself off (colloquial)

(Ruìxìng): Luckin Coffee — major Chinese coffee chain founded in 2017, known for rapid expansion and low prices

  • 旗下 (qí xià): under the banner of

  • 现磨咖啡 (xiàn mó kāfēi): freshly ground coffee

  • 高质平价 (gāo zhì píng jià): high quality, affordable price

  • 黑马 (hēimǎ): dark horse / surprise winner

On the other hand, Starbucks China’s “sell-off” is largely driven by dramatic changes in the competitive landscape. In the past year alone, not only have homegrown brands like Luckin Coffee and Cotti expanded rapidly, but Lucky Cup — a freshly-ground coffee brand under the Mixue Group — has also surged thanks to its “high quality, affordable price” strategy, widely regarded as the biggest dark horse in China’s coffee industry in 2025.

  • 截至目前 (jiézhì mùqián): as of now

  • 万店 (wàn diàn): ten thousand stores

  • 近在咫尺 (jìn zài zhǐchǐ): within reach / just around the corner

  • 便捷 (biànjié): convenient / easy

  • 划等号 (huà děnghào): equated with / synonymous

  • 第三空间 (dìsān kōngjiān): third space (café as social space)

  • 品牌效应 (pǐnpái xiàoyìng): brand effect / brand power

  • 溢价 (yìjià): premium / price markup

  • 买单 (mǎidān): to pay / foot the bill

As of now, Lucky Cup’s total store count has surpassed 9,500, putting its “10,000 stores” target well within reach. Ten years ago, it was hard for consumers to buy a decent cup of freshly ground coffee for just a few yuan as conveniently as today. From a consumer’s perspective, it was essentially an era where Starbucks was synonymous with coffee — an era where people had to pay a premium for “third space” and brand prestige.

  • 品质尚可 (pǐnzhì shàng kě): reasonably good quality

However, at the time there was a vast market gap between Starbucks at around 30 yuan and instant coffee for just a few yuan. Almost no national coffee chain could offer consumers a cup of freshly ground coffee — decent in quality, fast and convenient — for around 10 yuan.

  • 大街小巷 (dàjiē xiǎoxiàng): every street and alley

  • 亲民 (qīnmín): affordable / accessible to the public

2017 was a key turning point in China’s freshly-ground coffee industry — Lucky Cup and Luckin Coffee, two brands now found on every street and alley, were both founded that year. These brands pursued localization in flavors and successfully positioned their prices in a more affordable, mainstream range.

Yangtze River Delta / Pearl River Delta

Of even greater industry significance is Lucky Cup’s breakthrough into high-tier markets — with over 1,000 outlets in tier-1 cities, it has accelerated its presence in high-value regions like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Pearl River Delta. This strategy not only helped Lucky Cup reach more price-sensitive yet quality-conscious consumers, but directly drove a shift in tier-1 coffee markets from domination by mid-to-high-end brands toward more diversified, multi-tiered competition.

  • 好喝不贵 (hǎo hē bù guì): tasty and affordable

One industry backdrop to Lucky Cup’s rapid expansion is that domestic coffee market demand has undergone a fundamental shift. As coffee penetration rates have risen, coffee has gradually moved from being a social status symbol to an everyday necessity — and “tasty and affordable” has become the new consumer consensus in the freshly-ground coffee market.
