“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.”

Few opening lines have cast a longer spell.

In this episode of The Common Room, we return to Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca—the haunting 1938 novel of Manderley, Maxim de Winter, the unnamed second Mrs. de Winter, and the woman whose presence seems stronger in death than in life.

My mother-in-law has dementia. One day we put Rebecca on her phone. She sat listening intently. Afterwards, she told us it had taken her back to her childhood. Rebecca, she remembered, had been one of her favorite books.

That moment led to a larger question:

Why do some stories stay with us for a lifetime?

It is an especially fitting question for Rebecca—a story that begins with a woman dreaming of returning to a place that exists now only in memory.
