Caroline Schiff is opening a diner in Brooklyn. A good, old-fashioned diner with Greek omelets and tuna melts and grilled cheese on rye (but come on, it will be really good rye). It’s called Monday Diner, and TBD when it opens, as all restaurant openings go—but it will be worth the wait.
Because do you know Caroline? She’s a phenomenal, James Beard-nominated pastry chef and Food & Wine Best New Chef who kicked off the Baked Alaska craze that swept through New York City when she was at Gage & Tollner. You might recognize Caroline by her meringue cloud of voluminous brown hair, which is almost always piled atop her head. Beyond the diner, Caroline is also dropping her next cookbook, Daily Dessert: Treats on Repeat, on October 13th. Get ready.
It’s a wonderful follow-up to her first book, The Sweet Side of Sourdough, with home-bakeable recipes that make a case for a nightly sweet treat. “You can come home from work and bake yourself one giant chocolate chip cookie,” she told host Kerry Diamond on Radio Cherry Bombe, and she has a recipe for that, among other single-serving sweet treats. Caroline has a knack for elegant yet playful desserts, like an espresso crunch coffee cake, tiny tiramisu, and the black-and-white coconut macaroons she brought to the podcast taping (perfect bribe; no notes). Plus, a few paparazzi shots of her cat, Babka. (Of course, her cat’s name is Babka.) You need this book.
