Do you allow yourself to build in public? This past week, I have supported four people who were willing to say yes to their own “creative limits”, as my mentor Victoria Granof says. One of them was Gwen Wiscount, co-founder of Fabrik Social Spaces.
Gwen started her new Substack last week and tagged me in a LinkedIn post. She was inspired to start a publication after attending the first Substack Creative Club, where I interviewed Lindsey Lerner about Field Notes. I sent her a DM that she was publishing from her profile, not her publication.
It took a quick phone call, some texts, and now, Gwen set up with her publication. She also has my Substack workshop with checklist. Note: This is super common since Substack has placed emphasis on the profile. It’s something that I support with my students and 1:1 clients with regularly.
What I have found while working with hundreds of people on their creative visibility (Substacks, podcasts, websites, and social media) is that you don’t have to have it all figured out but you do need the willingness to try and either delulu or full awareness you might not get it right, the first time.
What separates people that say they are launching a creative project such as a Substack and those that let it sit in drafts is the willingness to not be perfect. Bonus: when you take that leap, trusting that you will be supported by your community, just like Gwen was.
Creative Prompt: From my latest solo podcast episode. Where am I being invited to become more visible? Bonus: Tell us in the comments how you are building in public.
Me using a traditional molinillo to whisk cacao in a gorgeous photographer’s loft in Jersey City.
I wanted to create a drink that had an iced coffee–like feel, so I infused the cacao with chamomile lavender tea and added plant-based milk (it’s also delicious with ginger tea or fresh ginger). Ceremonial-grade cacao is grown using heirloom varieties of cacao. For me, it’s important to support Latine brands like Cacao Laboratory that honor ancient traditions and sustainable farming practices. Make an Iced Latte
