St. Clair Catholic District school board is selling the former Georges P. Vanier school in Chatham to Conseil scolaire Viamonde for $1.6 million.

Catholic board trustees approved sale of the property, located at 20 Cecile Ave. in the city’s south end, at a special board meeting on Aug. 10, the board said in a release. The transaction was to close on Monday, Aug. 24.

Conseil scolaire Viamonde is the French-language public school board for Southwestern Ontario and the greater Golden Horseshoe region.

“The sale of Georges P. Vanier means St. Clair Catholic no longer has any surplus properties,” said board chairperson John Van Heck. “This has been an important priority for our board, and we are excited to close this chapter.

“I want to thank associate director Amy Park and her team for their hard work and commitment throughout this process.”

“We are pleased to have reached an agreement that supports the responsible disposition of this property,” said Lisa Demers, the Roman Catholic school board’s chief executive and chief education officer. “I applaud the board for its continued commitment to ethical decision-making and the careful management of our resources.”

The restructuring resulted in the opening of two new schools – St. Angela Merici in 2020 and St. Teresa of Calcutta in 2024 – and the closing and sale of the former St. Ursula, Monsignor Uyen, St. Vincent, St. Agnes and St. Joseph properties, the St. Clair board said.

The former Our Lady of Fatima school was refurbished and reopened as the new Monsignor Uyen in 2021, the board added.
