Me: “What if I dramatized a scene from my novel and offered up a video as part of the overall Kickstarter/Novel/Music experience?”
Everyone who loves me: “That’s different. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that before.”
Me: “Hmmmmmmmmmm.”
Everyone who loves me: “So, like a staged theatre bit for five minutes or so?”
Me: “Yeah, exactly. Except with credits, it’s a tiny bit longer.”
Everyone who loves me: “Cool. Won’t that be a lot of extra work on top of too much work already?”
Me: “I’m sorry, I didn’t hear you. Can you repeat that?”
Preface to the scene: The three Taylor siblings (adult children of Gideon and Sophie Taylor) have gathered at big brother Augie’s posh Menlo Park condo. They’ve already had a very difficult day dealing with an ongoing issue with their mother and now one with little brother Michael. Augie is trying to reclaim some peaceful normalcy with an impromptu dinner while Michael faces a credible threat to his safety. Marie (Augie’s girlfriend) is relatively new to the family, but warmly welcomed into the siblings’ rhythm of teasing, storytelling, and affection. Soon enough the mood turns serious again. Security specialist Kalil Brown arrives and explains his plan to keep Michael and the entire family safe. While Augie and Michael step away to make a difficult call to their father, middle sister Kat and Marie slip out to the patio terrace for a few minutes of quiet, a glass of wine, and getting to know each other better.

Dolly. Wow. Here in Nashville: One of the most remarkable mass tributes to the wonder of Dolly Parton were the huge numbers of people lined up on the road to walk or drive by Dolly’s house last night. It was quite a sight to see and of course a loving and appropriate tribute. The hunger to draw near to whom or what has brought goodness into our world is strong. As it should be. Several years ago I took one of Dolly’s iconic photos and created this mixed media piece with acrylic on canvas and photography. It hangs in our home. From now on it will serve as a reminder that Dolly’s life was a series of What Ifs and so many of them bore good fruit. Her life is a Masterclass in class and the mastery of artfulness and joy-making.
