Unregulated migration drives down the cost of labor and drives up the costs of housing and social services in the receiving nation. It therefore serves imperialist interests.
From the Third World emerges the insight: the necessary road is economic nationalism, in which the leading economic enterprises, be they state or private, seek mutually beneficial trade with enterprises of other nations, taking advantage of complementary differences in technology and natural resources. States ought to seek mutually beneficial economic agreements to facilitate the process.
Authentic economic nationalism is the necessary road for all nations, regardless of their technological capacity and their historical trajectory with respect to imperialism.
Authentic economic nationalism is in essence anti-imperialist, because it does not seek to impose terms of trade on other nations. It seeks mutually beneficial terms of trade.
Elite-supported globalism is the antithesis of authentic economic nationalism. Globalism ignores the needs of national economies to the benefit of large transnational corporations.
Elite-supported globalism emerged in the United States in response to the sustained structural crisis of the world-system, which emerged when the system reached and overextended the geographical and ecological limits of the earth, thus depriving the world-economy of the motor that previously drove its expansion from the sixteenth through the twentieth centuries, namely, the conquest of new lands and peoples and the peripheralization of their economies, that is, the conversion of their economies into suppliers of cheap raw materials and cheap labor.
Elite-supported globalism has been supported by woke ideologies, which distract the people by dividing them according to race, culture, and values with respect to gender identity and sexuality.
The rise of Donald Trump was based on his naming of unregulated migration and woke anti-national ideologies. However, Trump and the second Trump administration lack sufficient anti-imperialist consciousness to forge an authentic economic nationalism.
The current situation calls for a people’s movement, led by an exceptional leader who can put before the people an authentic economic nationalism, stressing the need for mutually beneficial trade among all nations and post-imperialist cooperation. Said leadership must formulate a post-woke ideology that unifies the American people.

Exceptional leadership in Cuba
In my observations of Cuba and other nations of the Third World since the 1990s, which have included extensive travel to Cuba, I have observed that exceptional leadership is the key to forging ideological-political consensus. See “Toward ideological-political consensus: Reimagining and reconceptualizing the divisive issues of our times,” October 3, 2025
