Dr. Akilah Cadet, MPH · Change Cadet Action Network®

I can’t eat raw fruits and vegetables. Goodbye fresh strawberry shortcake. Crudité. Salads. Fiber. I can’t take opioids aka pain medication; how I’ve been managing my pain for years. I’ve been diagnosed with yet another rare thing (bringing my rare total to six). My life is forever changed.

So what is gastroparesis (GP) you did not ask? Well tune in to find out or use any search engine (not AI) to look it up. I shared part of this video on Instagram and within minutes I was welcomed by the GP community. They informed me that August is Gastroparesis Awareness Month! As a Virgo this is dream surprise planning. And I have so much to learn and unlearn to live with this rare condition.

Food, pain management, nourishment, and my mental health has been and will continually be tested. Yes it is hard. Yes I am having a hard time. Yes I am sad. But I will figure it out. From time to time I may share stories about gastroparesis as it is rare and awareness and advocacy is kinds my jam (that as of now I think I can eat, but we shall see).

Image and Video Description- Dr. Cadet debuts her long golden braids that make her hazel eyes get access to anything she wants. She wears a cream upcycled vintage tie dye tee with pinks, greens, and gold that pairs with her braids. She gives us her classic smirk showing her dimple at times while she sits at her desk in her office with a bookshelf behind her. She pounds her desk from time to time cuz this shit is serious and yet with a heavy life changing diagnosis she exudes light.
