In this second episode of Was it just a dream?, we’re invited to follow the symbol of the fish as it appears in a dream.
The fish is a symbol that C. G. Jung took a deep interest in. In Aion, in particular, he returns to how this symbol functioned as an anchor for early Christians, at a time when being Christian was dangerous, when the faith lived underground, and before the cross had become its official symbol.
In our commentary on this dream, we invite the fish to remain a fish, to swim freely, to stay hard to hold, to resist being turned too quickly into a concept or an answer. And yet, as the dream shows, the question of how the dreamer , and we as dreamers, relate to the fish seems to be central.

Dream: The Fish
I’m trying to save a fish and to get it back into the water, and I’m really working at it, and I’m holding it for a long time.
It’s wrapped in a tissue. I’m trying to keep it wet. I am holding it next to my heart. I’m trying not to get bitten or poked by it. It must be a magical fish because we talk to each other and the fish lasts a long time out of the water.
I get distracted and forget about the fish, but then it reminds me and I get back to my quest, to get it safely back into the water. I have found a place and I’m filling a pool up with water. Maybe like an actual pool or like a tiered hot tub? I ask the fish what temperature it would prefer and it says, cool. The fish is about 8 inches long and it has silver scales.
I’m making my way to the water, not sure if it is the same water now or different, and it’s very crowded. I have to walk around people and I feel anxious to get it there. It feels like a sacred honor to take care of this fish.
