“How do I be authentically me when this much is riding on it?”
A client asked me that the other day — right before a keynote in front of a big room, and a pitch where he needed the investor to really get him.
Here’s what I told him:
“Being you isn’t hard. It’s actually effortless. You don’t have to do anything to be who you are. What you’re struggling with isn’t being you... it’s the courage to be you when it counts.“
Most people have this backwards. Being yourself was never the hard part. Pretending is. The performing, the managing, the editing of yourself in real time so it lands right — that’s the exhausting part. And that’s what people are doing, every day, that’s leaving them completely and utterly exhausted.
It’s when you say something you actually mean... and then soften it, or take it back, the second someone’s face shifts. You walk out of a room thinking, that wasn’t me. You keep rewriting the talk because the honest version feels too exposed.
None of that is a communication problem. It’s the cost of the performance — and it’s expensive. (It’s also why your fear of being “found out” quietly keeps you small — I wrote about that here.)
The friend who’s all sovereignty and self-sufficiency online — until the breakup, and suddenly her codependency exposes itself to the surface. The high-flying entrepreneur who says this is who I am, this is how I do business — until the recession hits and they’re not issuing refunds, they’re cutting corners, they’re someone you don’t recognize.
And if we’re honest, sometimes that person is you. And when it is, and you need to reckon with the mismatch between who you thought you were and how you’re actually acting when rubber hits the road, it stings. I’ve been there, done that, gotten the t-shirt. No shame in it — we all have a version we default to when we’re scared and in survival.
The work isn’t to never have it... It’s to stop letting it run the show.
This is why creating an authentic brand and sharing your story is not as simple as hiring a brand strategist to write your manifesto, rebranding the site, or running the speech ten more times so it comes out clean.
Because the thing you’re trying to fix isn’t the thing. The message is the surface. Underneath it is the pattern that keeps pulling you back into the performance — and you usually can’t see it from where you’re standing. Not because you’re not self-aware, but because you’re too close to it and you’ve carried it too long.
TAKEAWAY: Being yourself is effortless. It's the pretending that's exhausting — which means you're already doing the hard thing. The work isn't to become someone. It's to stop performing the one you're not.
In the audio, I walk through what actually stops the performance — how to build the courage to be seen, and how to look at the parts of yourself you’ve been managing (the you that gets selfish when you’re tired, cutting when you’re scared) without falling apart.
Because being authentic asks one more thing than most people expect: to let yourself be seen in the tender parts rather than just the polished ones. (More on that exact fear — wanting to be seen and dreading it at once — here.)
If you’ve been asking how do I be more authentic — this hands you the better question.
That pattern underneath the performance — the one you can’t quite see from where you’re standing? That’s the whole job of a Story Clarity Intensive.
A 90-minute one-on-one with me, to find the thing underneath the thing, and break the pattern at the root... instead of managing it for another decade.
One client spent 17 years unable to publish her book. Once we found what was actually in the way, it became a #1 bestseller in 25 countries.
If you’re ready to stop performing a version of yourself and lead as who you actually are — book your Intensive here. This is where the pattern finally breaks.
