If baseball week kicked off our summer with a bang, week two went somewhere a little more magical! This was Medieval Rainbow Unicorn week (because when you let your kids come up with the themes, things get a little interesting), and I think it might have out-cuted baseball week, which I did not think was possible.
My mom even had a castle tent and some riding horses which were pretty much the hit of the week, so those combined with figurines and some foam swords and you just know this week was a hit. Here's how it went, day by day, plus a few extra ideas in case you want to run your own version!
We started the week with a craft that turned out way way cooler than I expected. We cut shield shapes out of cardboard, covered them in foil, and then used permanent markers to color in "stained glass" sections right onto the foil. It’s one of those crafts that everyone get really into…even adults ok.
How to do it:
Cut a shield shape from cardboard
Add a design on it with sharpie or pencil, doesn’t matter!
Outline your design with hot glue or puffy paint if you want kids to do it independently.
Wrap the shield tightly in foil (shiny side out) making sure to smooth it down so your design shows.
Color in your design sections with sharpie or permanent marker. It dries super fast and there’s little to no mess!
Other ideas for Make it Monday: decorate paper or cardboard castles, build a castle out of an old box, or set up a “unicorn hair salon”. This book below has a TON of fun ideas that my kids wanted to recreate.
This one was almost too easy and the kids loved it just as much as the elaborate baseball snack board from last week’s camp.
We used a castle-and-fairytale shaped cookie cutter set to make our own animal crackers, I found a recipe for DIY crackers here. The molds are from amazon and there are a TON of them for any theme you could want, so don’t hold back.
Other easy ideas you could do would be to make unicorn pancakes, pretzel swords, or graham cracker castles (images are from pinterest for inspo)!
This is a classic activity that has YET to fail me. The night before, I froze a bunch of little castle and unicorn figures into a block of ice in a sand castle container, then set it out the next day with droppers, small cups of warm water, and some plastic tools. Then let your kids spend the morning trying to “rescue” their toys. I also set out watercolor’s to let my kids “paint” their castles beforehand, but to be fair they just really enjoyed the water rescue.
We kept this one simple and curled up for a My Little Pony movie afternoon. It was the perfect movie for my youngest unicorn-obsessed kid, and honestly I am really enjoying this slower movie day in the middle of the week.
Other movies to watch on this day: The Sword in the Stone (my personal favorite) or Quest for Camelot are both great medieval options if your crew is a little older or just needs a break from ponies. You can also watch Tangled, Shrek, Sleeping Beauty…if there’s a castle, it’s a go!
For our field trip/ fun adventure we went to a real-life castle themed escape room, and it could not have been a better fit for our week. Pulling a sword from a stone, following a bunch of medieval themed clues, oh it was just the MOST fun we’ve had. It also helps that doing an escape room has been on my bucket list for eons. If you ever have the chance to do one, I say go for it.
Other ways to do this day: Medieval Times is the classic pick if there's one near you, I mean jousting and dinner with your hands is hard to beat for this theme. If you want something free and at-home, set up a backyard jousting tournament with hobby horses and the cardboard shields from Monday, or run a "knight academy" obstacle course in the yard and end it with a real knighting ceremony (a wooden spoon works great as a sword,ok).
Two weeks in and this tradition just keeps getting better. Next up: camping week, which means s’mores, flashlight scavenger hunts, and probably a tent in the backyard (or living room if we get rained out).
