In a first-of-its-kind collaboration, the International Council for Men and Boys and Celebrating Masculinity are supporting Literacy For Boys to help more boys across Australia. Reading, writing, grammar, speaking with confidence, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension are foundational. Literacy For Boys has an effective online program targeted at boys to improve their literacy skills, and is aligned with the Australian Curriculum.
International Council for Men and Boys has identified twelve areas of disparity, where men and boys are lagging around the world. Number one on this list is education. Boys consistently lag in literacy, they are less likely to finish high school, are punished more severely, and receive lower grades for exactly the same work. Young men are disengaged from education, and are far less likely to complete higher education.
The World Bank Group reports that: “Learning poverty rates—the proportion of children unable to read and understand a simple text at 10 years of age—are higher for boys than for girls in all regions and almost all countries of the world."
Celebrating Masculinity and ICMB have provided sponsorship funding for the expansion of services by Literacy For Boys. This collaboration also includes in-kind support, networking and connections, plus the amplification of the positive messages from LFB...
Literacy For Boys has a unique online program, which is tried and tested. This is ideal for reaching boys in rural, regional, and remote areas of Australia. It's very pleasing to see LFB engage with the newly appointed Shadow Special Envoy for Men and Boys, Llew O'Brien MP (another passionate supporter for the education of boys and young men).
Later this month, Tanya Grambower (Founder and Managing Director of Literacy For Boys) will meet with David Maywald (Board Director of International Council for Men and Boys as well as Founder of Celebrating Masculinity). This meeting in Brisbane will work on solidifying the collaboration between organisations.
It's very positive that Tanya and LFB were asked to make a submission to the federal inquiry into the factors driving educational attainment. This demonstrates the credibility and expertise that they bring to the education of boys and young men.
The collaboration between ICMB + Celebrating Masculinity + LFB is an example of men and women of goodwill who are working together for the benefit of our precious next generation. As we lift the literacy of boys, it strengthens families and raises communities up.
