Well if you live in the Lowcountry you likely know what I’m speaking about. The random days and weeks in February or even March where we get to experience the rejuvenating Sun and warm temperatures in the 70s, only to have them dip back down into the 30s and 40s any week and remind us, oh it is still Winter. But for now, we cherish this extra sip of sunshine and let it inspire us into momentary Spring action. The warmth brings a lift to my mood even though I love Winter in the Lowcountry.
Our January was consistently cold, the first time I recall in the last several years, making the trees, perennials, bulbs, and shrubs remain in a state of deep rest longer than in previous years. Last year, Violet and Red Maple were blooming by the first week of January. This morning I look up from our sunroom window to notice the Red Maple in our backyard is just now breaking buds one month later (a more normal time for it actually, we’ve just had a hot few last years).
