Welcome back to the newsletter — three readings to help you cut through the noise and make sense of world politics today. This edition focuses on the US’ evolving strategic posture under Trump, how Russian private companies take advantage of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and how the changing world order can be an opportunity for some African countries to reshape global power structures.

1️⃣ Ten Jolting Takeaways from Trump’s New National Security Strategy — War on the Rocks

Read here

An analysis of the Trump administration’s updated national security framework. This piece breaks down ten key shifts in American strategic thinking. From great-power competition to economic security. Honestly, as it’s important to read because it explains the direction the current US administration is taking, and it’s not looking good.

2️⃣ Building on Ruins: The Russification of Mariupol — Bellingcat

Read here

An investigative deep-dive into how Russian companies are reconstructing Mariupol, the Ukrainian city devastated during the invasion. If you want to go in want to see how cynical the world can get, this piece will show you. Because wars don’t end when the fighting stops. Rebuilding can be just as political as destruction, especially if we are talking about regions that are under occupation.

3️⃣ The International Order Is Shifting: African Countries Have an Opportunity to Reshape Global Power Relations — The Conversation

Read here

This is more of a hopeful and strategic take on multipolarity, showing how it can create space for new voices and alliances. If you’re interested in how power is being redistributed, this is worth your time.

💭 My takeaway:

The international order is changing so fast it’s hard to keep track. If you only have time for one, go for the first. These changes are massive. There’s genuine shock in European policy circles about the direction the second Trump administration is taking (and from many of my US friends as well).
