Netflix's Love Is Blind is coming to Canada — and Canadians are already tagging their friends

Is Canada ready to find out if love is truly blind? If you’re single and interested, the pods are soon opening on this side of the border.

Netflix announced Tuesday that its reality dating series Love is Blind — which has been a streaming hit in the U.S. — is on its way to Canada.

If you didn't fall into a deep binge when it launched in February 2020 — here's how it works. 

A bunch of single people enter pods. They'll talk, flirt, get to know each other, date one another and, apparently, fall in love. Sight unseen. 

That's right. Couples, sitting on opposite sides of a wall, get engaged without seeing each other.

Once they're engaged, they meet face to face and things get real. They jet off on a lavish trip with the other matches, where they put their chemistry to the test.  Then they move in, meet the family and on their expedited wedding day, they'll make the final choice — say "I do" or walk away.

Looking for love? Casting is now open

Think you're up for Love is Blind, too? Casting is open now for Canadians looking for love. Netflix announced the spinoff on Instagram — and some got right to it.

"It was the first thing that I saw when I opened my Instagram. ... I was shocked," Vancouver’s Fernanda Estrada De La Rosa, a longtime fan of the show told CBC News. "I was like, this is where I need to apply. So I did it right away."

For Estrada De La Rosa, the show's format is an exciting change.

"I feel like in Canada, it's just like the toughest place to date," she said. "I'm like, thank God it finally came here."

Others were flocking to the comments section.

"This is crazy. Should I do it??" one wrote. "Anticipating all the "No way, eh!'s" convos thru the walls 😜," commented another.

Some even took it a step further. "Opening my phone to a text that my friend signed me up for LOVE IS BLIND CANADA?????????????" one wrote on X.

The announcement comes as several other reality shows are getting a Canadian treatment. Big Brother Canada is back this summer on CTV and Crave after it was cancelled by Global in 2024. And Jersey Shore's Canadian counterpart, Canada Shore, just wrapped its second season of filming in Kelowna, B.C.

Meeting the moment

Pop culture critic Katherine Singh says we'd be 'remiss not to mention ... that Canada's clearly having a moment in media."

She points to hits like Heated Rivalry, and pop culture hot topics like former prime minister Justin Trudeau's relationship with Katy Perry as clear evidence the country is in the zeitgeist.

"It makes sense that now might be the time that they would kind of tap into that and capitalize on that."

Sean De Vries, a Canadian TV producer who's worked on shows like The Bachelor Canada says the spinoff makes perfect sense. 

"The sort of passion for this particular show is undeniable," he told CBC News. "It seems only natural that if Netflix feels like they need to do something in Canada, this is going to be it."

As for what makes a successful dating show, De Vries says, "authenticity always wins."

The show is being produced by Insight Productions, the company behind Big Brother Canada and Canada Shore.

"I'm one of the gazillion Day 1 die-hards who knows how brilliant this format is," Insight co-chief content officer Erin Brock wrote in a release, noting she's beyond excited to delve in with a Canadian cast.

To be eligible, you'll have to be at least 19 when you apply and a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada as of January 2027.

Since its launch, Netflix has done 10 seasons of the U.S. version and launched spinoffs in places like Japan, Brazil, Sweden, the U.K., Mexico, Germany, Argentina, Italy and France. It also ran a version called Love is Blind: Habibi featuring singles from from across the Middle East and North Africa.

In the U.S., it's hosted by Vanessa and Nick Lachey. A Canadian host hasn't been announced.
