Canada's Marco Arop finishes 4th in men's 800m at Diamond League Lausanne

Canada’s Marco Arop finished fourth Friday at the Diamond League track and field meet in Lausanne, Switzerland, at Stade Olympique de la Pontaise.

Arop went out fast and led the field heading into the bell lap, but couldn’t maintain the pace over the final 400 metres, finishing fourth in 1:43.18.

Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi won in 1:42.19, followed by Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati, who posted a season-best 1:42.31. American Brandon Miller finished third in 1:42.55.

Last year, Arop and women's shot putter Sarah Mitton were the only two Canadians to qualify for the Diamond League Final in Zurich, where they both finished third.

Arop entered Friday’s race sitting second in the men’s 800m Diamond League standings behind Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi. Although Arop had not yet officially secured his spot in the Final, his position in the standings put him in a strong position to qualify.

The 2026 Wanda Diamond League Final will take place September 4–5 in Brussels, Belgium.

Olympic champ Tebogo, American Kayla White take 200m

Reigning Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo of Botswana cruised to victory in the men’s 200m, finishing in 19.87 seconds. South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile finished second in 19.98, while Zimbabwe’s Makanakaishe Charamba took third in 20.14.

On the women’s side, American Kayla White won the 200m in 22.18 seconds. It was a photo finish for second and third, with Great Britain’s Amy Hunt edging Nigeria’s Favour Ofili. Both athletes were timed at 22.32 seconds. Two-time women's world champion, Jamaica's Shericka Jackson pulled up with an injury and was taken off the track in a wheelchair.
