P.E.I. educational assistant charged with assaulting a student

A 38-year-old educational assistant in P.E.I. has been charged with assaulting an elementary school student, according to the Kensington Police Service.

The woman has been charged with three counts of assault, one count of assault with a weapon and three counts of assault causing bodily harm. Police are not releasing the woman's name in order to "protect the privacy of the victim," according to the release.

The alleged victim is an eight-year-old student.

"Nearing the end of the school year, in June of 2026, we received a complaint from the Public Schools Branch in regards to a possible assault against one of the students at Queen Elizabeth Elementary School," said Chief Landon Yuill.

"It was a few incidents but not getting into much more specifics at this time."

Yuill wouldn't elaborate on the extent of the child's injuries but said the child is okay at this time.

"We understand the Public Schools Branch acted quickly to investigate the incident and refer it to police. The individual was put on leave following the incident. Our thoughts are with the student involved and any other students who may have witnessed the incident," the Department of Education and Early Years said in a statement.

Police say they don't know if there are other victims. But if there are, police ask that they come forward.

The educational assistant is scheduled to appear in court in Summerside on Sept. 30.
