A Whale Cove councillor accused of sexual assault and manslaughter was released on bail Wednesday.
Michael Angutetuar was arrested after an incident that allegedly resulted in the death of a young woman on the morning of March 25.
A court-imposed ban prohibits publication of the woman's identity and the evidence presented at the bail hearing.
Angutetuar was elected to Whale Cove’s council in October 2023 for a four-year term.
Despite the criminal charges, he plans to continue to serve as a councillor unless faced with “circumstances beyond his control," Angutetuar's lawyer, Alan Regel, said in an email after the bail hearing.
But the hamlet is already exploring ways to expel Angutetuar.
“I'll have to send him a letter that he is off council," the hamlet’s senior administrative officer Brian Fleming said in a phone call.
Angutetuar owes the hamlet approximately $1,200 for tires he bought from the municipality and never paid for, Fleming said.
While incarcerated in Iqaluit, he also missed more than three council meetings in a row.
Both of those issues give the council the right to dismiss him, Fleming said.
"I think it's important for councils to remain, you know, not biased in these circumstances," Fleming said of the allegations against the councillor. "But I don't think they're too pleased with what all that happened."
Angutetuar will remain under house arrest until his trial.
He is scheduled to appear in front of a judge again on Sept. 23 in Whale Cove.
