An 80-year-old woman died in a two-vehicle crash on the Trans-Canada Highway near the western Newfoundland community of Flat Bay on Thursday, police say.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police responded to the crash around 12:30 p.m. NT, according to a statement Friday morning. The collision closed both lanes of the T.C.H. near the Flat Bay Junction for around seven hours on Thursday.
The 80-year-old woman, who police said was an American, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. A 79-year-old man in the vehicle with her was taken to hospital in Corner Brook with serious injuries, police said.
The driver of the second vehicle was also taken to hospital, although police said their injuries were minor in nature.
Friday's statement didn't share updates on either of the people in hospital's condition, but added no further details will be shared publicly.
Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has been engaged in the investigation.
