A 35-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder after a woman was found dead in a Montreal apartment earlier this week.
Betoven Étienne appeared at the Montreal courthouse Friday afternoon to face charges for the death of 41-year-old Kerline Jean, as well as an additional assault charge involving a second person.
According to his lawyer, he pleaded not guilty before the judge and will contest the charges in the near future. He’s due back in court on Nov. 3.
The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) has indicated this was a case of intimate partner violence.
The mother of three was killed with a bladed weapon on Monday in an apartment on 39th Avenue, near Paul-Corbeil Street, in the Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension borough.
SPVM officers responded to the scene in the afternoon after receiving a 911 call. Upon arrival, they found the woman unresponsive and the man critically injured.
Police say it was the 16th homicide this year on the island of Montreal.
Five women have been killed in incidents of intimate partner violence in the greater Montreal area this year, according to the SPVM. The Coalition féministe contre la violence envers les femmes says there have been a total of 16 "possible femicides" in Quebec to date this year.
