Weird detours, inaccurate time estimates, walking routes that double back on themselves. Is this some new instance of enshittification?
Instead of simply exhorting the rest of the world to get on board with the American way of space cooling, we really should be looking to Europe and other regions for clues to adapting our habits to the world that we are in, instead of remaining stubbornly attached to the artificial world that we created, but can't sustain.
Yes, the use of some form of A/C is now inevitable. But it can be adopted in ways that are more equitable, sustainable over long periods, and minimize the harmful downsteam effects. But Americans aren't leading these efforts. And, many Americans' assumption that they have the answers - when they absolutely do not - is as sad as it is galling. It is their communities will mostly be left behind…
