What is an “imposter”? An imposter is something that appears to be genuine, authoritative, or real but is not actually what it seems. There are three aspects of this notion: an imposter convincingly presents itself as something, observers take it to be what it appears to be, and its true nature is something else entirely.
We suggest that Space and Time are constructed appearances which are mistaken for fundamental reality. Both Space and Time seem real and genuine but their true nature is not what is portrayed. So from a One Life perspective, the metaphors Space and Time can be considered “Imposters.” Space and Time are not ultimate structures of reality. They function more like cognitive appearances—useful but misleading frameworks through which experience is organized.
Ordinarily, you believe objects exist in Space, Space is an independent container, and experience occurs within that container. With One Life awareness, perceptions arise within awareness itself. There is no separate spatial container, Space is simply the felt openness of awareness. What you call Space is actually a conceptual interpretation of the openness of mind, an imposter appearing real.
The “Space” imposter works like this: there is an appearance of “Space surrounds objects” which triggers the assumption that “Space exists independently.” There is an appearance that there is “distance between things” which seems to imply that “things occupy locations.” Space masquerades as an external physical framework, when in direct realization it is simply the display of awareness.
Time is an “Imposter” holding the everyday belief that there is a past, there is a future, and the present is a moving point between them. One Life sees the past as existing only as memory appearing now. The future exists only as imagination appearing now. Your experience is always immediate presence. Time, therefore, appears as a continuous flow, but when examined it collapses into a sequence of present appearances.
The imposter mechanism of appearances and assumptions reveals your sense of a flow of Time. It allows for an idea that a real timeline exists, that past events exist somewhere behind you, with future events being ahead. This is conceptional labeling, with all things arising and falling now. The Time Imposter impersonates an independent dimension, when Time is actually a cognitive ordering of experiences within awareness.
One Life is often described as having two inseparable qualities: Emptiness – no inherent structure or substance, and Luminosity – the capacity for appearances to arise.
Space corresponds to the emptiness aspect (openness).
Time corresponds to the dynamic display of appearances.
But when misunderstood, these natural qualities of awareness are reified into external dimensions. The Imposters promote Space becoming a cosmic container and Time becoming a universal clock. The deeper truth is Space and Time appear within awareness, yet they have no independent reality outside it.
The purpose of this teaching is not cosmology—it is liberation. When you directly recognize awareness, the solidity of Space relaxes into openness, and the pressure of Time relaxes into immediacy. Experience becomes spacious, timeless, self-arising direct knowing of your true nature. An imposter is something mistaken for ultimate reality. Space and Time Imposters appear real, but are actually conceptual overlays. The opportunity is to recognize the Imposters and simply relax into your deeper knowing and liberation will arise.
