Despite what many of us have been taught for the last six thousand years, or so, communion with God, the universe, or the all doesn’t require a mediator. In many cultures, sacred connection isn’t a scheduled event for Friday night or Sunday morning. It doesn’t involve a man telling us his Important Thoughts, always from his Important Point of View, from high atop a raised platform.
Nope. Instead, anyone can access their higher power through meditating, fasting, silent retreats…and more. Some do this by ingesting plants. Plants with very specific molecules. Such ceremonies have been part of our species’ spiritual life for millennia.
Long before organized religions or the colonial crimes that spread them across the globe, spiritual practice in most cultures was individual and participatory. Rather than patriarchal or hierarchical.
And those sacred rituals are still around, despite the imperialists’ best efforts. We just have to look for them.
