How often do you fail yourself? I do it a lot. A toxic trait if you ask me. I will show up for someone else faster than I ever will for myself. Yep, that’s the truth. So, knowing myself, I decided to try the accountability partners technique to get me showing up for things that are important to me, from exercising to writing this email. Well, the decision was made, my appointment scheduled, and what did I do in our second meeting? Showed up late! I got distracted, and when I looked at the clock, it was 14 minutes past our date. I missed the session.
Silence. Followed by frustration with myself and disappointment.
Getting stuck in the I AM bad, or I AM imperfect, was quite easy for me, and for years, it was the norm. A few thousand lessons later, this time I was able to take a deep breath and say to myself: “Okay, Cata. We made a mistake, but we are not a mistake. This is just one thing we happen to do, and it’s only 14 minutes late. So, I can either call it for the day and accept that I failed, or I can get back on track.” I chose the second one.
I AM not a failure; I failed to show up on time. Result, I did what I could with what I had. It might look like I didn’t give it my 100%, after all, I didn’t show up. However, I actually gave my 110% because I picked myself up and got back on track. That’s commitment and real consistency. If you have been there, done that, good for you! We are messy and fluctuating, but remember, results are always a compound of imperfect actions. There are tools that help, but the rest is accepting that we are not perfect yet still amazing.
Real consistency isn't about being perfect; it's about picking yourself back up. I believe you only need to be one step ahead to help others to do exactly that. I don’t just share these stories to vent; I share them as a map for your own journey.
