As we head into NewFronts week, the air is thick with the usual promises of “unprecedented scale” and “revolutionary targeting.” But for those of us navigating the shift from traditional linear to the streaming-first ecosystem, the glitz of the presentations often masks a lack of functional innovation.
To cut through the noise, I’m bringing back my 4C’s for Streaming Ad Products. To be clear this is a reinventing of the Classic 4 Cs of Marketing (Customer, Communication, Convenience and Cost) to reflect the Streaming marketplace, so whether you are sitting in the front row or watching the livestreams, use this NEW filter to grade this year’s crop of streaming ad products and what to look for as the industry take the stage.
The Rubric: What Makes a” Grade A” Product?
Before the first deck is shared, let’s recalibrate our expectations. A truly elite streaming product must satisfy four core dimensions:
1. Client (Objective Alignment): Does the product offer a path to specific KPIs, or is it just “logo soup”? Last year, Roku set the gold standard here (90% score) by providing clear links from awareness to conversion.
2. Connect (The Journey): Does the capability “connect the dots” throughout a campaign, or is it a siloed, one-off placement? We want to see how a CTV spot leads to a mobile interaction or a retail outcome.
3. Consistent (Viewer Experience): Is it frictionless? An ad that interrupts the story is a failure. We are looking for “endemic” alignment—think Samsung’s specialized hubs or high-quality pause ads that respect the viewer’s break.
4. Convert (The Path to Purchase): Can we turn a viewer into a consumer? With the rise of retail media networks—notably the Walmart/Vizio synergy—the bar for shoppable TV has never been higher.
The Streaming Strategy Scholar’s Field Notes for the Week Ahead
As you evaluate the presentations from the likes of Roku, Samsung, and Vizio, and publishers like Tubi, YouTube and Tik Tok, keep these five trends in your notebook to see who is building for the future:
1. The E-commerce & Shoppable Evolution
We’ve moved past the novelty of the QR code. The “Convert” grade this year should be reserved for those who have shortened the distance between inspiration and transaction. Watch for deep integration with retail media networks that allow for “one-click” purchases directly within the stream.
2. The Battle for the Home Screen
The Home Screen is the new “Prime Time.” As navigation becomes the primary hurdle for viewers, look for how manufacturers are using interactive ad units on the glass to drive discovery. A high “Connect” score will go to those who treat the home screen as a gateway to a brand’s entire ecosystem, not just a static billboard.
3. Short-Form & Vertical Integration
With the explosion of social-style consumption, CTV is no longer just for 16:9 cinematic content. Pay attention to how platforms are integrating short form highlights and vertical video feeds into the living room. The hint here: Is the experience “Consistent” with how younger audiences consume media today?
4. The AI Influence
AI will be all over everyone’s presentations but look beyond the buzzword. Is the AI being used for better contextual targeting, creative versioning at scale, or predictive “Client” outcomes? We are looking for AI that solves a strategy problem, not just a technical one.
5. The Live Sports Frenzy
With sports moving to streaming en masse, the “Live” experience is being redefined. Evaluate these presentations on how they handle the “Connect” score during high-stakes games. Are they offering real-time stats, interactive betting overlays, or “Women’s Sports Zones” that give underserved fans a dedicated home?
The Bottom Line
NewFronts should be more than a showcase of content and tech; they should be a showcase of utility. As a strategist, your job is to identify which platforms are acting as “architects” of the new viewer journey and which are just painting the same old fences.
Stay tuned, I’ll be releasing my final “Report Card” after the curtains close.
