Beyond Birth · Carson Meyer

Women have gathered to celebrate rites of passage for centuries across nearly every culture, in various ways. Today in the United States, it’s customary to celebrate the anticipated arrival of a baby by “showering” mom with baby gear. Baby showers today are inextricably linked to consumer culture and reflect the belief that gizmos and gadgets are what mothers need to feel prepared. These offerings to parents are rooted in love and the desire to help, but I can tell you with confidence that no number of items on a baby registry will ever come close to providing new parents with what they really need in the early months of parenthood: support, connection, community and nourishment.

Over the years, I have seen mothers, myself included, choose to forgo the “traditional” baby shower and registry and instead invite their friends and family to partake in a birth blessing ceremony that acknowledges the spiritual growth of the rite of passage at hand. The book, Birth as an American Rite of Passage, explores this in depth and illustrates how birth practices are a stark reflection of the culture we are born into.

Birth blessing gatherings have their roots in the Navajo traditional “Blessing Way” that imparts blessings of protection and connection through major life initiations. The mother blessing not only centers the mother but also uplifts her support system, reminding them that they will be called on.

Below are some ideas to incorporate into a birth blessing celebration:
