We are at an identity tipping point

For many professionals, the ground beneath their identity has begun to shift - quietly at first, and then all at once.

Not because they have failed or because they lack competence. But because the structures that once stabilised identity are no longer as reliable as they once were.

For most of modern professional history, identity and occupation were closely intertwined. You became something - a lawyer, an academic, a manager, a specialist- and over time, that role became part of how you understood yourself.

It gave continuity, coherence and, above all, it gave you a place to stand.

That stability is now weakening.

AI is reshaping knowledge work at a pace few anticipated.

Careers are lengthening while becoming less predictable. Reinvention is no longer exceptional. It is increasingly expected.

Alongside this, life itself interrupts identity in ways that were once less visible, whether through illness, redundancy, burnout, personal loss, caregiving, or shifting priorities.

Each experience brings the same quiet question:

Who am I now?

For many professionals, this question emerges long before it is spoken aloud.

They sense a subtle dislocation. The role still exists, but it no longer feels sufficient to contain them - or the role begins to change, and with it, the self that once felt secure within it.

This is not simply career uncertainty.

It is identity fragility.

Those who have built their lives around achievement often feel this shift first.

For years, their identity has been reinforced by progress, competence, and external recognition.

Achievement provided continuity.

But when the structures that once rewarded and reflected that achievement begin to change, the identity built upon them can feel unexpectedly fragile.

This is not because the person themselves has diminished, but because the very foundations beneath them have moved.

We are reaching a tipping point

A tipping point is the moment when gradual change becomes undeniable - when increasing numbers of people recognise themselves in the same question:

Who am I if what I have always done no longer defines me?

This question is unsettling, but it is also generative.

It creates the possibility of a deeper, more resilient form of identity - one that is not dependent on any single role or structure.

An identity that allows you to evolve without losing yourself - to adapt externally while remaining internally coherent and to experience disruption without fragmentation.

This is the work now facing many professionals.

It is not simply about learning to adapt, but about learning to remain anchored within themselves as they do.

Above all, it is about the ability to come home to yourself repeatedly, even as the world continues to move.

We are still early in this transition - but make no mistake, the tipping point is here.
