Carolyn A Pappas · Carolyn's Sketchbook

Hello all,

I hope you are well. This is the point in summer when I am looking forward to autumn, my favorite season of the year. I’d like things to cool down a bit outside for starters.

After the big push to finish my sketchbook, I have been thinking about what I should take up next. I finished reading the book The Twelve Week Year, and it has inspired me to get some things done. I found it to be a genuinely good book, simple in concept and inspiring me to take action. It was an ebook that I read on the Kindle app on my phone, so it was a bit awkward to read, but I was able to get through the entire thing.

As I was reading, I began to really think about what I focus on, and all the time I let slip through the cracks. I know the things that I need to do, I just do not execute on them well. So this past week was the first of my first twelve week period with this system. I made a written plan just like the book recommends and I have tracked my progress daily.

Some of the things I am working on are projects that I don’t want to publish until they are completed, so you may see less new work from me for a bit. But rest assured, I am keeping busy.

Below, take a look at some iterations of the same drawing that I completed over a couple of years, most recently, last week. I always like to compare how different versions of the same drawing take on their own specific look.

An open sketchbook with a sketch of a juniper branch.
A false start in my sketchbook from sometime in 2024. Notice how I started the drawing in an awkward corner of the page without thinking.

A later version of the same drawing from 2024 in Procreate. To transfer the drawing, I took a photo of my sketchbook page and then traced it on another layer. Notice how this version has very bright colors and bolder lines.

I wasn’t happy with that first Procreate version, so I decided to try it again last week. In this version, I rotated the image, used a paper texture background in a cream color, used a different color palette, and added more texture. I tried to be less precise with my coloring for a more realistic look, although I can get better with that aspect.

A link for you:

I’ve realized that listening to YouTube videos/podcasts, etc can be a distraction when I am drawing and painting. In the past, I’d like to listen to music when I worked, so I’m starting to get back to that. I really like this YouTube channel full of soft, guitar ambient music (and no AI): cityvswoods.

Until next time,
