I’m so happy to share this conversation with artist Rachel Wolfson Smith. This is my first Interstudio visit to do not in person! Rachel lives in Amsterdam. I was so thrilled after we first talked, to realize now my conversations won’t be limited by geography (much as I love a real life studio visit)!
Sadly, after riding high on our fantastic conversation, I went back to edit, and realized there was NO SOUND. None, no matter how many times I tried to wish it back into existence. Technology, you beast.
Fortunately, Rachel graciously agreed to have another conversation the following week. And this is part 1 of that conversation. Even richer in many ways, as she gave us a close-up on her drawing process IN ACTION, and shared some new facets of her studio practice.
Hearing Rachel talk about her process really opened me up to my own. It reminded me how ultimately rich it is to LOSE the work, in order to find something even better.
If you’re being safe the whole time,
Nothing will have the opportunity to be great, because you never gave yourself the opportunity to lose it.
And if you can lose it, even if you do lose it— then you have nothing to lose, and that’s where invention lives.
And that’s usually the stuff that you end up really falling in love with.
