Caroline Wright · Caroline’s Substack

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Austin artist Elizabeth Chapin in her studio, as she prepared a stunning new body of work for Nectar with Karen Hawkins, on view now through May 5.

I love talking to Elizabeth—she always has great book recs and a fresh take on something I’ve been thinking about too. Her process is labor-intensive and inventive, and there are many layers behind what you see, both physically and metaphysically.

We get into that here, along with calling on dead artists, how ideas are not your own, and inventing ecosystems within a painting, that may or may not be visible.

I hope you enjoy our conversation, and a look inside Elizabeth’s magical studio.

It was fun getting to talk about my show with Deborah Hay at a recent Fusebox Artist Salon, along with the incredible playwright, Katie Bender. Don’t miss her one-woman Instructions for a Séance, or any of the other great performances during the Fusebox Festival this week!

Our show, Different Dances, is up through April 25. We’ll be having a closing party that day, so stay tuned or check the Verdant website for details.

We went to the Sistine Chapel Experience. It wasn't all I hoped, but we got pretty close to God.
