Well, hello there.
I’m cooking up something exciting for February, and I thought you might want to hear about it.
I’m hosting my first Digital Storytelling Night for the members of The Skiff (a coworking community in Brighton) - the idea is that we’re going to take one story and hack it into as many creative digital directions as we can.
We’re talking:
Games
Zines
Illustrations
Collages
Digital experiments
Anything else we can dream up on the night - the only proviso is that there has to be a digital element to the process (that could be code, software, or just using your phone or tablet.
It’s going to be quick, messy, and a little bit chaotic - the way creativity should be.
I’m telling you this because, hey, you might want to start your own digital storytelling night.
The idea is simple:
We start with one story (thinking something well known like a fairytale for the first event).
This is distributed printed out AND available to download online … no typing out required.
Then, everyone decides what they’re going to do with it - maybe so or maybe as a collab - either way, we pull it apart, remix it, and reshape it into something completely new.
There’s 2 hours to play
… and pizza, Always pizza.
By the end of the night, we’ll (hopefully) have a collection of fabulous creations to share.
Plus .. people can work on things up in more detail before the next month and show off at the start of that event.
The goal isn’t perfection or polish - it’s about experimenting, collaborating, and seeing where the story takes us.
Think of it as a storytelling hackathon. A bit of that “make do and mend” energy, where we just throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. Scrapheap storytelling, if you like.
I want this to be a night that sparks wild ideas and gets people experimenting, but to pull it off, I need some help.
Specifically:
• Workshop tips: If you’ve ever run a creative hack or group storytelling session, what worked? What didn’t?
• Story suggestions: I’m still looking for the story to kick things off. It needs to be familiar(ish), but also ripe for pulling apart and rebuilding. If oyu were going to run an event like this, which story would you use?

There’s something magical about letting people loose on a single idea and seeing what they come up with. It’s not just about the end result - it’s about the process. About trying things, making mistakes, and creating something that didn’t exist before.
It’s also about embracing that scrappy, imperfect energy that often gets buried under the pressure to produce polished work. Some of the best ideas come from hacking things together and seeing what happens.
