I am Gloria Blizzard, a Canadian born writer of Trini parentage, raised mostly in Canada. I write on the intersections of culture in art, music, dance, science and spirit. I’m also the author of Black Cake, Turtle Soup, and Other Dilemmas: essays on music, memory and motion.
Additional essays, articles, poetry and reviews and have been published in World Literature Today, the Humber Literary Review, the Globe and Mail, By Blacks, Musicworks, the WholeNote Magazine, Dance International and the CBC. My essay, ‘Passage’, won the Malahat Review creative nonfiction award 2023, and ‘The Year of Jazz’ was nominated for Pushcart, 2023. Invisible Press listed a feature amongst Best Canadian Music Writing, 2022.
Carnivalesque is a specific literary genre. Carnival is also a spirit that I grew up with. Carnival culture usurps, disrupts, masks, changes, evolves, while you chip to the music down a long road.
I’m bending the term in the spirit of Carnival, towards exploration, revolution and jubilation. Carnivalesque with Gloria Blizzard is celebrates manifestations of art and the human spirit.

Carnivalesque is a space to apply a lens of Carnival, to look at the world askance, appreciate the revelry in costume and masks, gesture and voice to explore our capacities to create art and to celebrate this raucously.
