The Bar Is Low: McConnell, Platner, and the Mediocre Men in Power

This week on Culture and Consequence, Andrea and I sat down to talk about something that keeps coming up again and again: the bar for leadership in this country is embarrassingly low. And nowhere is that clearer than in the men who continue to hold — or chase — power.

We start with Mitch McConnell, whose legacy is already being polished and softened in real time. But when you strip away the political niceties, you’re left with decades of decisions that reshaped the Supreme Court, weakened voting rights, fueled gun violence, and opened the floodgates for unlimited money in politics. People will speak kindly out of tradition and decorum, but the record is the record — and it deserves to be named plainly.

Then we head to Maine, where Graham Platner is still in the Senate race despite a Nazi tattoo, allegations, contradictions, and a mustache that should’ve been disqualifying on its own. The conversation isn’t about partisanship — it’s about standards. About how often we excuse, overlook, or normalize behavior that would get any woman laughed out of the room before she even filed paperwork.

We talk about toxic masculinity, DEI, voter habits, and the strange cultural loyalty that keeps people tied to leaders who work against their interests. And yes, we eventually get to Disclosure Day — aliens, wonder, fear, and whether humanity could handle the truth if it ever arrived.

It’s a conversation about accountability, culture, and the stories we tell ourselves about power. And as always, it’s honest, sharp, and rooted in the belief that we can do better — and deserve better.
