Science Knows Why Your Signature Sex Moves Stop Working

Somewhere in a Swedish laboratory, a woman lies very still while a researcher drags a soft-bristled brush down the inside of her forearm. A second researcher reads the result off a hair-thin electrode threaded directly into the nerve in her arm.

Slow the brush down, and the nerve gets bored. Speed it up, and the nerve gets really bored. But somewhere in the middle — in that unhurried, slightly lazy register — it goes off like a struck bell.

Researchers discovered there is one narrow speed range for pleasure: one to ten centimeters per second, with a sweet spot around three. Go faster, and the nerve files it under “lint roller.” Go slower, and it files the touch under “something creepy is crawling on me, please advise.” In between lives the entire neural machinery of the caress.

The technique is called microneurography, which sounds sexy only if you are a broke college student earning beer money from the research department. The nerve is called the C-tactile afferent. It does not report pain. It does not do fine detail; it could not read braille to save its life. It reports one fact: you are being tenderly touched by another living creature.

Line Löken pinned the number down in 2009. The nerve’s firing rate and the pleasure people reported rose and fell together, both peaking in that 1-to-10 band. A clean, faintly ridiculous inverted U. Pleasure, graphed. There is a scientifically optimal speed to caress a human being, and your nervous system has known all along — it just never thought to tell you.

These nerves are also not where you think they are. The most romantic patch of skin on the human body is not the one poetry has been writing checks to for three thousand years. (I’ll show you below. It will retire a gesture you currently consider tender.)

The C-tactile afferent will also make you rethink temperature, or at least rethink your wardrobe before the wardrobe comes off.

And most assuredly, the C-tactile afferent will prove that no machine will ever replace human touch, no matter how many tech warlords promise ever-more-sophisticated sex dolls and vibrators. The reason has nothing to do with engineering and everything to do with a 2012 brain scan.

But here’s the joke the C-tactile afferent plays on you, and it’s a mean one: the better you get at the perfect touch, the faster it stops working. That reliable, never-misses, they-always-respond-to-this move in your back pocket? It is engineered to fail. Not because you got worse at it — because you got good at it, and “good,” to this nerve, is a slow-acting poison. (Hint: It is the same reason you cannot tickle yourself.)

Your partner’s brain is doing something very specific to your best material. However, once you understand it, your brain can outsmart their nerves.
