I’m a card-carrying member of the ‘expensive wee’ club when it comes to supplements. Dr Karl is my messiah and he said most supplements get processed without making any difference to your health, so you’re basically paying $$$ to make your pee a bit fancy.
I concur. There’s some decent science around zinc, probiotics and creatine but most of the other stuff is wishy washy.
However we (Ben and I) recently started taking magnesium before bed to improve sleep quality and we noticed a positive difference, tracked through our Apple Watches. Faster to get to sleep mainly, not much else.
We ran out of the ones we usually take, so I went to our local chemist to get more. Our local pharmacy has this gun lady working there who is the keeper of health for locals. She subtly clocks everything. When I was in the process of conceiving my youngest, she had clearly noticed me buying pre-natal supplements and ovulation sticks. She pointedly stared deep into my eyes when I bought hard-core anti-inflammatories for a neck injury. ‘You cannot take this if you’re pregnant. If there’s a slight chance you are pregnant, please don’t take this.’ I told her I had my period, it was fine and thanked her for watching out for me.
Anyway same lady recommend magnesium glyconate. She said she read somewhere it metabolises more effectively than straight magnesium and suggested the Carusos brand. Randomly they also have a 100% money back guarantee (what???) but I will not be using it. These tabs are the G.O.A.T. We ran out and had to go three nights without them and it sucked. I went crashing in there first thing Monday morning, grabbing at the bottle like a toddler with a juice box.
So that’s my habits rec this week. With my tiny test group of two with zero scientific evidence. But with a money back guarantee you have nothing to lose except maybe the time spent getting your money back.
Let me know if you try it. Would love to know if it works for anyone else.
Reading
Australian Gospel for book club. I like it but I’m not sure it’s written all that well. There’s an episode of Conversations that’s better IMO. There’s a lot of extra info that didn’t need to be in there. Story is fascinating though.
Watching
House of Guinness which I’m enjoying but it’s a little off somehow. There’s aggressive text that booms on the screen to explain things and it’s a bit OTT. The actors are good but weirdly forgettable. Not sure I recommend it but also maybe I do?
I’m also watching Outrageous which is about the Mitford sisters and is weirdly Guinness adjacent. One of them marries a Guinness and is the grandmother of Daphne Guinness.
I’m not on Instagram or Tik Tok but whenever I pop onto Facebook to check my book club group I get served videos from Chef Tova. I love her.
Listening
Heavyweight. I’ve never listened to it before but this episode had me hooked.
Wearing
“I don’t trust mirrors so I always take polaroids!” - Here’s my raw, un-accessorised capsule for a few days in Melbourne. All tops are Alpha60, pants from left to right - Everlane, Variety Hour and COS. Shoes are Radical Yes.
Doing
We had some mates come to stay with us and they christened the bus by being the first over-night sleepers in there. We bought it three years ago and have been doing it up very slowly. It’s finally insulated and spider-free, so basically a fancy tent. Reports were they were warm and toasty. We went digging for treasure in the back yard with our metal detector and the kids went wild playing with some spinny/flying toys Ben 3D printed for them. Very wholesome.
We’re off to Melbourne for the weekend to cap off the school holidays. Visiting the zoo, maybe check out the gallery. Dumplings and ice-cream optional but preferred.
How was your week? Hope it was fab.
